Summary[edit]

Description

The National Science Board (NSB) and National Science Foundation (NSF) presented the Vannevar Bush, Alan T. Waterman, and Public Service awards to honorees at an evening ceremony at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., on May 6, 2014. NSF Director France Córdova presented the 2014 Waterman Award, the agency’s highest honor for outstanding researchers under the age of 35, to Feng Zhang, a faculty member at the Broad Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. The 2014 Vannevar Bush Award, given to senior scientists in recognition of public service in science and technology, was presented to Richard Tapia, a mathematician at Rice University’s Computational and Applied Mathematics Department. Tapia is highly regarded for his research on computational optimization as well as his strong support of women and minorities in science. The 2014 Public Service Award for an individual was presented to Arthur Caplan, founding head of the Division of Bioethics at the New York University Langone Medical Center. Caplan is widely recognized as a global leader in medical ethics. The 2014 Public Service Award for a group was presented to the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellowships. Since 1973, the fellowships have enabled more than 2,500 scientists and engineers to work in congressional offices and federal agencies, and gain an intimate understanding of government and policymaking. Ruth David, chairman of the ad hoc Committee on Honorary Awards, presented the NSB awards. The evening’s speakers included NSB Chairman Dan Arvizu, John P. Holdren, assistant to the President for science and technology and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the awardees.
