Description

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) held a briefing on super storms on March 24, 2015. Dr. Roger Wakimoto, NSF assistant director for Geosciences, moderated a panel of NSF-supported scientists who discussed their research on hurricanes, tornadoes and space weather, and also what is needed to improve risk assessment and hazard preparedness to reduce the public’s vulnerability to storm impacts. The panelists were (seated, right to left) Dr. Howard Bluestein, the George Lynn Cross Research Professor at the School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma (and world-renown storm chaser); Dr. Jenni L. Evans, professor of meteorology and acting director of the Institutes of Energy and the Environment at Penn State University, and Dr. Harlan Spence, director of the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space at the University of New Hampshire.
