Description

A elegante e monumental Estátua Equestre do Rei Restaurador mede acima do plinto seis metros, é obra de bronze da autoria do escultor funchalense Francisco Franco (1885 – 1955) enquanto que o pedestral de granito é do risco do arquitecto Pardal Monteiro (1897 – 1957).

Segundo Sant’Anna Dionísio, o escultor “tentou, parece, de certo modo, reconstruir o falado e fortíssimo ginete de nome o Baluarte que D. João IV mandou comprar na Andaluzia, alguns meses antes da revolução de 1640”, cavalo que foi comprado a um baluarte pelo mestre estribeiro-mor do Duque, António Galvão de Andrade, “encantado com a sua grandeza e segurança” e que mantinha tal dignidade nos desfiles e paradas “que mais parecia cavalo de metal”.
