Picture of the Year voting round 1 open == Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Hello, I may be using your photo to illustrate a line to a song I'm making a video of. The song is called Letter From Home, and the line is "This little place," referring to the place romantic love takes us in comparison to where a romance with God will take us, God in the song not particular to any specific religion. It will most likely be posted on YouTube and subsequently on one of my sites (Donny Duke), probably The Chipmunk Press. Since it's a Window's Movie Maker video I put the credit at the end with just attribution to you and that I got it from Wikimedia Commons. Thank you for sharing your work.

Appropriately Licensed[edit]

You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Thanks -- Colin (talk) 22:54, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

12.03.2014 Dear Muhammad, Dar is one of our partner cities in the City Resilience Profiling Programme, launched by UN-Habitat in 2012. The Programme is willing to strengthen urban resilience to ensure the effectiveness of response interventions during times of crises (natural, technological and man-made). You can find a short story about the launch of the Programme at this address: http://www.unhabitat.org/content.asp?cid=11639&catid=5&typeid=6&subMenuId=0

I'm writing to you as we would like to use your picture in our new brochure that inform our partners about what's happening in the Programme. It's some kind of a newsletter. This brochure will also be distributed at the UN-Habitat World Urban Forum 7 hosted in Medellin, Columbia in April 2014 (visit http://worldurbanforum7.org for more information on the event). Your name will be written just underneath the picture with the ©. If you want to get the brochure, we can send it to you by email.

We are also thinking of using it in our website which we are building right now to present the city of Dar: www.cityresilience.org/partner_cities. If so i will update this text.

Best regards, Helene FOURNIERE. CRPP/UN-Habitat.

"Happy Diwali!"[edit]

While Diwali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is "the awareness of the inner light". It is the belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the "victory of good over evil” refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening come compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Satcitananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light. While the story behind Diwali and the manner of celebration varies from region to, the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light! And this year Diwali and All Souls' Day come together to fully defeat the Evil! "Happy Diwali!"JKadavoor Jee 06:17, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

My name is Laurie and I'm the Project Manager for na2ure, an NYC-based startup toy company. We featured this photo (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chrysomya_albiceps_eating.jpg) of yours in our upcoming app, and wanted to thank you for your lovely photo. Thank you!

na2ure is all about designing science play. We developed a game-changing platform called ferret that classifies ecological data into an intuitive network that can be easily learned through play. The high end value of our work attracted STEM>STEAM icon John Maeda, as well as the VCs behind LittleBits, Sphero, Makerbot, and Shapeways. The science has been vetted by MD's and PhD's, tested by kids, and praised by educators as appealing to all ages.

None of this would have been possible without your work. Thank you.

The app is available on the iOS platform and will be released to the public soon. Be sure to follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Anigramit) and Twitter (@anigramit) for a quick, easy way to share the news with your social media network -- and to keep up to date on all the great stuff we’re doing.

Again, thank you! Laurie Vazquez Project Manager, na2ure manager@na2ure.com

Macro lighting[edit]

Hi Muhammad,

Hope you noticed I purchased a Sigma 150mm macro lens with the community support. I think it a similar lens that you and Fir0002 are using with OS. It will be helpful if you can share your experience on artificial lighting and use of diffuser. Jee 15:55, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Muhammad. I bought an external flash. It works well; but it seems it fails to light close subjects if mounted on shoe. The same issue when internal flash is used. Is it true and we definitely need a bracket to point to a close subject. See the discussion at User_talk:Jkadavoor/campaign#Flash_tests. Your advise is appreciated. Camponotus sp Tanaemyrmex.jpg[edit]

It may add value to a photo like the one above if you add a coordinate to indicate where it was photographed. With the ant above one has no idea where it was taken, and it may be either Africa or Asia. With a coordinate someone may later conclude which species or subspecies it was, or add other additional data. JMK (talk) 12:11, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there[edit]

I have used your photo of the "African Elephant" in an article I wrote for Examiner.com. Thank you so much for a great photo. Here's the link: http://www.examiner.com/article/one-ton-of-elephant-ivory-destroyed-time-square Thanks again, G. Jones Examiner.com

Found this and I think it's yours.[edit]

Hi again, I went to MorgueFile.com and looked and there your photo of the African Elephant was. They do not require anything to use the photos, so I thought I would let you know that someone may be messing with you! Here's the link to that page. http://www.morguefile.com/archive/#/?q=african%20elephant If you can't find it at the link, just type in their search tool there the term "African Elephant". Thanks, G. Use of your photo of Kaaba[edit]

Hi Muhammad! I am working on videos for a YouTube channel called Egypt in 5 Minutes. I am editing a video about the 5 Pillars of Islam. In the video, the speaker mentions the pilgrimage to Mecca and visiting the Kaaba. I would love to use your beautiful photo of the Kaaba in the video! Please let me know if this does not work for you. If you wish to see the video, it will be released on April 8, 2022, at 8 am Eastern Daylight Time in the US. The title of the video is "Ramadan Month and the 5 Pillars of Islam". Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Thank you! In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.

Round 2 will end at UTC.
