American Samoa - Territory of American Samoa
The Territory of American Samoa is an unincorporated U.S. territory located in the south Pacific Ocean southeast of the sovereign state of Samoa. The main (largest and most populous) island is Tutuila, with the Manu'a Islands, Rose Atoll, and Swains Island also included in the territory. American Samoa is part of the ► Samoan Islands chain, located west of the ► Cook Islands, north of ► Tonga and ► Niue, and some 300 miles (500 km) south of ► Tokelau.

In 1872 the United States take possesion of the port of Pago Pago in Samoa. In 1889 the Kingdom of Samoa becomes a kingdom under joint British-German-United States protectorate, from which the eastern part in 1899 is obtained by the United States. Out of these American possesions American Samoa is formed in 1912. In 1925 Swain Island is annexed to American Samoa. |
