Deutsch	Europäische Union Die Europäische Union' (EU) ist ein aus 27 europäischen Staaten bestehender Staatenverbund eigener Prägung (sui generis). Die Bevölkerung der EU umfasst derzeit rund 493 Millionen Einwohner. Im EU-Binnenmarkt erwirtschaften die Mitgliedstaaten zusammen das größte Bruttoinlandsprodukt der Welt. Gegenwärtig basiert die Europäische Union auf dem am 1. November 1993 in Kraft getretenen Vertrag über die Europäische Union und bildet die Dachkonstruktion der sogenannten drei „Säulen“ Europäische Gemeinschaften (EG), Gemeinsame Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik (GASP) sowie Polizeiliche und justizielle Zusammenarbeit in Strafsachen (PJZS).

Many aspects of the Union existed before that date through a series of predecessor relationships, dating back to 1951.
