This page is for requests to change your username on Wikimedia Commons. Please note that only usernames on Commons are dealt with here. To change your username on another Wikimedia project, please ask a bureaucrat on that project or make a request on Meta.

Renames are carried out by bureaucrats who will typically follow the guidelines below. However, bureaucrats do have a measure of discretion and may depart from the guidelines where they consider it sensible to do so.

Where the username you want to adopt (the Commons "target account") has never been in use, and has not been reserved by another user as part of a Single Unified Login (SUL) account, the rename should not normally be controversial. However, where the target account has already been taken, the rename can be carried out only by usurping (taking over) the existing account. That is allowed only in certain cases (see below).

Contents

[edit] General guidelines

[edit] Allowable requests

Re-naming requests can be accepted for privacy reasons, to harmonise a username across multiple wikis, or even for reasons of personal preference. Generally, bureaucrats will try to comply with any reasonable request, where they are able to do so.

[edit] Non-allowable requests

Sometimes, renaming is technically not possible:

  • Merge requests. It is not possible for bureaucrats to merge two different Commons user accounts, and requests to do so must therefore be declined.
  • IP address edits. Edits by IP addresses cannot be re-attributed to a new account. Only existing registered accounts can be renamed.

[edit] Special guidelines for usurpations

The following guidelines apply when the Commons target account already exists.

[edit] Allowable usurpations

  • Target account consents. If the Commons target account consents to the usurpation, the request will usually be allowed regardless of the presence of edits by the target account (unless the result is likely to cause confusion, for example where the target account is well-known).
  • Both accounts are owned by the same person. If the user requesting usurpation can demonstrate that the Commons target account belongs to them, usurpation will usually be allowed regardless of the presence of edits by the target account. (Sometimes this is required when the requester has already created the Commons account they wish to be renamed to, erroneously believing this to be a necessary part of the rename process). Note that it is not possible merge the two accounts.
  • Target account is unused, and has not been SUL reserved. Usurpation will usually be allowed if the Commons target account has been registered but never used (or has only deleted edits or entirely non-useful edits). In such a case, bureaucrats may at their discretion usurp even if the target account does not consent. However, usurpation will not be allowed in any event where the account has been reserved by somebody else as a Single Unified Login (SUL) account.

[edit] Non-allowable usurpations

  • The target account has useful edits and does not consent. Forced usurpations of Commons accounts with useful (non-deleted) edits and/or uploads are not allowed since, among other reasons, this could cause GFDL copyright issues. A target account with useful edits must explicitly consent to the usurpation if the request is to be permitted. Lack of response and/or user no longer available is not considered sufficient: explicit consent is needed. The existence of deleted contributions by the target account is not in itself usually a bar to usurpation, since these are automatically reallocated during renaming.
  • The proposed username for the target account is an SUL account of another user who has useful edits elsewhere. Requests to change your username to a name that has been SUL reserved by somebody else will not be granted. This tool allows you to see if your desired username already exists on other wikis.
  • The account requesting usurpation is not established. To ensure that requests are being made in good faith, usurpation of Commons accounts is reserved for established Wiki users. Requests to usurp a Commons target account may be declined if the user is unable to show a record of positive contributions to the wiki from which the request is being made.

In these cases you will need to select a different global name, or alternatively accept that your name on Commons will continue to be different from the name you use elsewhere.

[edit] What happens when an account is renamed?

When your Commons account is renamed, all of your previous uploads and and edits in page histories (including deleted edits) are re-attributed to your new name. Other user data, including preferences, watchlist, and password are also reattributed to your new account. Your old user and user talk pages will normally be moved to the new name at the same time.

Once the rename is complete, you will no longer be able to log in on to your old account as that will no longer be registered to you. In order to prevent a third party from impersonating you on your old account, that account will normally be re-registered by the renaming bureaucrat to a dummy user, and then indefinitely blocked (but the system does not allow the original account to be re-created in this way if it was originally an SUL account). If you have a need to retain the old account for your own use, please let the renaming bureaucrat know, giving your reasons.

The rename will not affect signatures you have already left on talk pages, or other places where you signed your username with ~~~~. Those pages will continue to display your signature (including the link to your old username) unless edited manually.

[edit] Do you really need your account renamed?

Every rename request puts a large load on the database, particularly to deal with the reattribution of previous edits. Please do not request a rename unless it is necessary. There are a number of alternatives you might consider, details of which can be found here.

[edit] Procedure

Please follow the instructions below carefully. Once you have made your request, you need to come back here periodically and see if there are replies. This is not a "fire and forget" process; you may be asked for additional information, verification, preferences, and so forth. It is not the bureaucrat's job to track you down and remind you to reply.
If a query is posted here to which you do not respond to within seven days, the request will be archived and closed as "not done".

Please do not create for yourself a new account at Commons. This will be done for you by the renaming bureaucrat. If you have already created a Commons account, please say so. It may still be possible to deal with your request, but you will need to prove ownership of the target account.

1. Check at Special:Listusers whether the new username you want on Commons already exists. If the name already exists (even if it is shown in red) it will not normally be available to you unless you are able to usurp the existing account. If you will need to usurp, check the usurpation guidelines carefully first to make sure you are allowed to do so.

2. Next, make sure you are logged in to Commons using the account you wish to rename. Anonymous requests and requests made from other accounts cannot be accepted.

3. Click on the appropriate link below:

4. Give your request a title and, within the body of the request, copy and paste the following:

{{subst:Renameuser|OldUsername|NewUsername|Your reason here}} for usual requests.
{{subst:Usurp|CURRENT_NAME|REQUESTED_NAME}} for usurp requests.

replacing OldUsername with your existing Commons name, and NewUsername with your desired new Commons name (target name).

If either your old or new username on Commons includes a space, replace the space with an underscore, as follows: _

Please also give a short explanation of the reason for the request.

It is essential to follow the next step (step 5) very carefully. If you skip it your request will automatically be refused.

5. If you want to adopt the same name on Commons that you are already using on another wiki, you will be asked for evidence that you control the account on the other wiki. Please do the following:

  • Click here and enter your proposed new Commons name. If the name already exists on one or more other wikis, and those accounts are controlled by you, please now follow the instructions at Commons:Changing username/Proof of ownership. You can skip those instructions if and only if your proposed username is not in use on any other wiki.
  • If you are unable to comply because you do not own the other account(s), we cannot normally change your name: please re-read the section Non-allowable usurpations, above.

6. Sign with four tildes (~~~~), and save the page when you are done.

Please ask any bureaucrat to check the page if you get no response within a couple of days.

The automated process responsible for reallocating your old contributions may take some time to complete. This is perfectly normal. Updates typically take a day or so, although may take longer if you have many edits and/or the job queue has a large backlog of requests to process.

[edit] Archives

Fulfilled, withdrawn, and declined requests will be moved immediately to the current archive.

/Archive1 (2004 - 2006); /Archive2 (2007, through end of July); /Archive3 (August 2007 - March 2008); /Archive4 (April 2008 - May 2008); /Archive5 (June 2008 - July 2008); /Archive6 (August 2008 - October 2008); /Archive7 (November 2008 - February 2009); /Archive8 (March 2009 - May 2009); /Archive9 (June 2009 - September 2009); /Archive10 (October 2009 - )

I know it's possible to usurp account.
In this cae, this could be requested ? --Archimëa (talk) 14:34, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
You didn't do many contributions from newly re-created II...Richard...II. You could just abandon it and continue to use Archimëa. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:49, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
This remane has been done to become anynymous... If i keep this account, esay to find me... --Archimëa (talk) 12:53, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

I thought to : with new II...Richard...II usurp the Archimëa account. I think it's possible... I saw on meta.wiki it can be requested. It's possible to do it it on commons ? --Archimëa (talk) 19:23, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Most of your contributions are with Archimëa account. You made only 4 with recreated II...Richard...II. I recommend you to just rename II...Richard...II to hide identity and abandon it. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:32, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

  • Requested name: Orrling (SUL reports: old & new) (rename user)
  • Reason: "OOH" stands for Orrling.Of.Haifa; I had picked it arbitrarily and now have reckoned this preference wrong, primarily as I now wish to reassociate my Commons-upploads across my multiple wikis' (growing) activity. Thank you! /Orrling

Technically a rename is fine, but as you say, a more unique name would be better. Kanonkas // talk // e-mail // 14:23, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
My 2 cents, but I think its a really bad idea to rename a user into a other username when that name is already in use by somebody else, When the other people will active SUL we have a problem because he wouldn't be allouwed to unify his account. Huib talk 18:28, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Is "Jimmy" his SUL name? If this is the case, I don't see the problem with renaming that to him here. I'm a bit unclear as to whether he owns the global name User:Jimmy. --Bastique demandez 15:25, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I do think he owns the global account, I checked on some places and I think it is one person on some wiki's
So I guess he owns the name in on the wiki's with the most contributions, but I don't think he owns:
Best regards,
Huib talk 16:54, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm not really keen on renamings TO common first name only accounts. However we have precedent, we've done George recently. If (this) Jimmy owns the SUL account (normally we want to get proof of that. That is, have this user edit from an account listed as SUL affirming the name change request, and show that it's an SUL account. But in this case the user has done that, SUL shows "Jimmy" on frwiki is global, and the user supplied a diff from frwiki affirming the name change request), and either; the local account does not exist, has no contributions, or was set up purely to block the SUL (it happens), then I think we should go ahead and do the rename. That's the case here so we should, I think. Regardless of my personal feelings about common first name only accounts (with recognition that I have one (relatively uncommon but not unheard of) and so does my wife (also relatively uncommon but not unheard of)...) ++Lar: t/c 13:01, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

I think will be good idea to choose more unique name. There are several active account with same name on other wikis. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:34, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

IIRC, I'd created the User:Janka account on commons myself, then had a problem with email program and could not correctly finish the registration. I was frustrated about this, so I just left commons alone until December 2007, where I've wanted to upload some images to it. I forgot the password for User:Janka so I just created another account. About the other users:

  • dewikibooks: made 3 single edits in a single on 30. Mai 2006, never later. I think this account is abadoned. [2]
  • de: My account
  • en: Had her last edit on 30 April 2009. I will ask if I may pick the commons account.
  • frwikitionary: Had only one edit in 2005. I think this account is abadoned. [3]
  • hr: Had his last edit in 2007. Speaks german so I will ask if I may pick the commons account.
  • nl: Had only one edit in april 2007. I think this account is abadoned.[4]
  • pl: Had only 4 edits on one day in 2005. I think this account is abadoned. [5]
  • ru: Had all his edits on one day in 2007, all on one article and discussion. I think this account is abadoned. [6]
  • sk: Made his/her last edit on January 2008. Knows german, I will ask if I may pick the commons account.
  • zh: Only had this single edit in wikipedia namespace [7]. I think this account is abadoned.

Please tell me if I may pick the commons account name if the "Janka"s in en, hr and sk say it's ok. -- Janka-de (talk) 11:38, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
