80 Leonard Street (80-82) between Broadway and Church Street in the Tribeca neigborhood of Manhattan, New York City was built in 1860-61 as a store with lofts above, and was designed by James H. Giles in the Italianate style with a cast-iron storefront facade from Daniel D. Badger's Architectural Iron Works firm; the remainder of the building is marble-clad. It's early tenants were dry-goods firms. Although the building is only 6 stories tall, the "sperm-candle" arcaded front -- so named because the columns resemble candles made out of sperm-whale oil -- is an architectural precusor to the design of skyscrapers which would be built in the coming decades. The building was converted to residential use c.1995, and is now a condominium known as "Tribeca Lofts". It is located within the Tribeca East Historic District.
