In 1850 Louis Agassiz commissioned a series of photographs for his study of "races". Photographer Joseph T. Zealy of Columbia, South Carolina, made a series of Daguerreotypes of slaves in the area around Columbia for Agassiz. The photographic subjects being a mix of African and American born slaves, male and female, per Agassiz's instructions.
These are rare portraits of individual slaves made in the USA before emancipation.
