Deutsch: Als Alte Eidgenossenschaft wird die Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft in der Form bezeichnet, wie sie vom Zusammenschluss der Urkantone Uri, Schwyz und Unterwalden im Jahr 1291 bis zum Einmarsch der Franzosen und dem Beginn der Helvetik im Jahr 1798 bestand. Die Alte Eidgenossenschaft war ein lockeres Bundesgeflecht, das stark von den Machtinteressen der einzelnen Mitglieder geprägt war. Sie bestand aus den eigentlichen Mitgliedsstaaten (ab 1513 dreizehn Orte) mit ihren jeweiligen Untertanengebieten sowie den zugewandten Orten und den gemeinen Herrschaften.
English: The Old Swiss Confederacy (German: Alte Eidgenossenschaft) was the precursor of modern-day Switzerland. The Confederacy was a loose federation of largely independent small states called cantons (as of today) that existed from the late 13th century until 1798, when it was invaded by the French Republic, who transformed it into the short-lived Helvetic Republic.
