English: Once the fourth largest city in the Empire. Considered to have some of the greatest early Christian mosaics to survive, dating from the beginning of open practice of the faith (appx. third century).

Italiano: E' stata un'importante città romana (la quarta per dimensioni dell'impero romano), poi sede patriarcale, e conserva una basilica patriarcale con un celebre ciclo di mosaici pavimentali paleocristiani, fra i più interessanti del mondo. Poco è invece rimasto della città romana: nell'area archeologica si ammirano le banchine del porto fluviale, un colonnato, e pochi resti.
