Three versions of this painting are known. The one at Woburn Abbey is by George Gower, and the cut-down version in the National Portrait Gallery, London, is attributed to Gower.
A third version, possibly commissioned for Sir Francis Drake and still in the Drake family, is definitely by another, unknown hand.
All were painted in or shortly after 1588 to commemorate the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
