Deutsch: Die Backsteingotik ist eine in Norddeutschland und dem Ostseeraum verbreitete Bauweise der Gotik. Die Verwendung von Backstein als Baustoff setzte im 12. Jahrhundert ein, die ältesten Bauten gehören deshalb noch der Romanik an. Im 16. Jahrhundert ging die Backsteingotik in die Backsteinrenaissance über. Charakteristisch ist das Fehlen von figurativen Bauplastiken, die mit Backsteinen nicht zu realisieren waren, die reiche Gliederung durch gemauerte Ornamente und Flächenstrukturierungen durch den Wechsel von roten und lackierten Ziegeln und weiß gekalkten Wandflächen.
English: Brick Gothic is a reduced style of Gothic architecture in Northern Europe, especially in the regions around the Baltic Sea without natural rock resources. The buildings are built more or less using only bricks. The resultant style is called Backsteingotik in Germany and Poland. Brick Gothic buildings therefore are to be found in the Baltic countries Denmark, Finland, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia and Sweden.
