Building code and fire code violations are crimes punishable by law. Sometimes they are subject to fines, sometimes to incarceration, or both. They also are subject to consequences with the insurance agency covering the property. The building code is typically in effect before occupancy. Thereafter the fire code governs the fire safety of the occupied building. Violations against one necessarily violate the other.
