Data encoding is the process of mapping data (for example graphics, sound or text sequences) into a format suitable for storing electronically. Examples of data encoding are used in Internet communications (URL-encoding, MIME encoding for non-ASCII characters, ...), in hard drives (e.g. RLL, MFM, etc.), in multimedia storage (MP3, AVI, JPEG ...) and so on.
