English: Donowen is the southern of the two coastal promontory forts in the townland of Carthage, County Donegal. The Donowen fort consists of two promontories behind one defense wall, separated by the Girt bay with the upper promontory north-west of the lower promontory. The upper promontory was the site of the 16th-century O'Doherty castle of ‘Donowen’. See O. Davies and H. P.
