Early Netherlandish painters are those painters who were active primarily in the Low Countries in the 15th and early 16th centuries, approximately the period starting with Jan van Eyck (ca. 1390–1441) and ending with Gerard David (1460-1523).They embodied at the same time the culmination of the Middle Ages and the transition to Renaissance.
