English: An Engraving is an object of art resulting from the act of engraving, or more commonly the artistically produced output object produced on paper, a so called 'PRINT' or (most correctly an) 'Impression', using such an object and the technology and processes of Engraving (such as an engraving made on a printing plate), the most common and familiar of which is paper money.
The act or action of Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto a hard, usually flat surface, by cutting grooves into it. It originated from the technology and practices needed to make the woodcuts for printmaking, but was extended to be purely artistic in decorative designs in metal.
The result may be a decorated object in itself, as when silver, gold, steel, lacquer, or glass are engraved with patterns or decorations. Alternatively, engraving metal may provide an intaglio printing plate, of copper or another metal, for printing the 'images on paper', which are also called 'engravings'. Consequently, the printed type of 'engravings' are a type of artwork that nearly everyone owns—the most commonly known of which are circulating bills—also called paper money.| See also: Category:engraving, Category:Illustrations, Category:Prints |
