English: Fire hydrants in the UK are almost always underground, under a characteristic cast cover. When lifted a Standpipe is screwed in. These are the same standpipes to which the public are directed if the public supply is interupted. The location of hydrants are identified by characteristic cast metal plaques, painted yellow. These have loose metal inserts to set up the distance to the hydrant, for identification purposes.
