Fretted Terrain is a type of surface common in certain places on Mars. It is found between latitudes 30 degrees North and 50 degrees North; and longitudes 270 degrees West and 360 degrees West. It was discovered in Mariner 9 images. Fretted Terrain contains cliffs, buttes, steep-walled and sinuous canyons. Mesas are often surrounded by lobate debris aprons. Flat valley floors typically have ridges on their floors. The terrain is believed to have have acquired its appearance due to abundant ice frozen in the ground.
