A grullo (also blue dun or grey dun) horse has a solid grey body, dark face and legs, and a dark stripe going down the spine.
-
A roan horse has intermixed white hairs in the body but do not turn lighter or whiter with age. The head and the legs will always be the base colour.
-
A varnish roan horse will turn unevenly lighter with age and be almost white with time, but will retain colour in the head and on the joints of the legs. Varnish roan is a type of "leopard complex patterning" and might reveal so-called leopard spots as the roaning progresses. These spots will never turn grey or white with varnish roaning.

Some sabino horses have lots of intermixed white in the body, but are born that way and will not turn white with age.
