The Hazaras (also rendered as Hazara or Azra) are a Hazaragi-speaking ethnic group found in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. They inhabit mainly the central region of Afghanistan but signficant numbers are also found in the Pakistani city of Quetta and in Mashhad, Iran. They are Shia Muslims but with a Sunni minority, comprising about 9% of Afghanistan's population. Their origin is unclear but scholars believe that they are Mongols arrived to the region from the time of Ghengis Khan's conquest.
