- Various types of image are not created or edited in the SVG, PNG or similar formats, but in richer formats (such as XCF) that contain information (such as layers, transparency and gradients) that aid in editing the file.
- Information graphics are typically created in software packages from data sets or formulae. As such, the favoured form for editing such graphics is from the actual commands and data sets processed by the information graphic software.
Providing such source files aids other editors in improving, copying and building on such images, and may be a requirement to comply with the transparency requirement of the GNU Free Documentation License.
