Kandy Perahera Festival (also known as Kandy Esala Perahera) is a grand annual procession in Kandy organised by the the Temple of the Tooth Relic. The procession is held over 10 days in the lunar month of Nikini (July or August) ending on Nikini full moon day. This historical procession (perahera) is held to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. During the procession, sacred relics are carried on an elephant through the streets of Kandy.
