The basic meaning of Kumade 熊手 (literally bear paw) is a rake. Bamboo rakes decorated with good luck charms enngimono 縁起物 sold as charms to bring good fortune in the upcoming year are sold at markets shortly before New Years day. These markets operate on the day of the cock and so are called tori-no-ichi 酉の市.
