Salome is a midwife who helped the Virgin Mary during the nativity of Jesus Christ. Salome is thus believed to have been the first person to bear witness to the miraculous birth of Jesus and to recognize him as the Christ. The scene of Salome bathing the child Jesus is the prototype of baptism and is a very common Orthodox nativity image.
