Mourning describes the specialized clothing and behaviors prescribed by various societies as appropriate for the family, servants, subjects, and associates of those who have died. Distinctive clothing of unadorned black with black caps and veils was worn by widows in Europe from he middle ages, and continues in some rural societies to the present day.
