Delaware County, Pennsylvania, just south of Philadelphia, has 84 listings on the National Register of Historic Places, including several National Historic Landmarks. Since it is small in area, the concentration per square mile is among the highest for rural areas in the US. Sites go back at least as far as 1682 (William Penn's Landing) and include many Quaker sites, the Brandywine Battlefield and related sites, many schools, and 18th-19th century architecture.
