English: Japanese Imperial Navy is the designation of the Japanese Navy prior to 1947. It is distinct from the present day Japanese Navy known as the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. There are important political nuances in Japan to use of these names. To some, a "maritime defence force" is different in kind from something called a "navy".
