From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository
Travelling overhead cranes are a form of gantry crane where a horizontal beam travels on fixed rail-mounted trucks, mounted high up at gantry level, rather than ground level with the whole structure moving. The lifting gear itself is on a small trolley that can often move crossways along the horizontal gantry. They are often found in factories and warehouses, as they are able to use the fabric of the existing building to support the rails.
See portal cranes for a similar design where the rails are mounted at ground level, and so the beam must be replaced by a rectangular arch.
