English: Phiale (Greek) and patera (Latin) are used in modern scholarship as synonyms for a round, shallow vessel used primarily for libations. Many examples have an "omphalos," a center indentation in the bottom that provides a finger-hold and creates a knob on the inner surface, often ornamented.
