Deutsch: Der Pranger war ein Strafwerkzeug in Form einer Säule, einer Plattform oder eines Holzpfostens, an denen der Bestrafte gefesselt und öffentlich vorgeführt wurde. Zunächst Folterwerkzeug und Stätte der Prügelstrafe, erlangten Pranger ab dem 13. Jahrhundert weite Verbreitung zur Vollstreckung von Ehrenstrafen. Der Pranger diente den Städten auch als äußeres Zeichen der Gerichtsbarkeit.
English: The pillory is a method of punishment in which the culprit was exposed to public humiliation by being forced to stand, with his head and limbs locked into holes in the pillory's boards (or chained to the pillory if it was a stone pole), and endure treatment that could go anywhere from the throwing of rotten fruit to whipping, flagellation, and even more serious forms of corporal punishment.
Français : Le pilori est une méthode de châtiment dans laquelle le coupable est humilié en public en étant contraint de rester debout, ses mains et sa tête bloqués dans les trous de la planche de pilori (ou enchaîné au pilori dans le cas d'une borne de pierre), et doit subir des sévices qui vont du lancer de fruits pourris au fouet, à la flagellation ou d'autres formes plus dures de châtiment corporel.
