English: A porte-cochère (from French, literally "coach gate", also called a "carriage porch") is the architectural term for a covered porch, a canopy, or a portico-like structure at a main or secondary entrance to a building, through which it is possible for a horse and carriage or motor vehicle to pass, in order for the occupants to alight under cover, protected from the weather.

Français : Une porte cochère (ou passage cocher) est une baie dans la façade d'un bâtiment par laquelle les véhicules peuvent passer (une entrée de garage par exemple). Elle est nécessaire pour accéder à la cour arrière à cause de la proximité ou de la juxtaposition de corps de bâtiment voisins ou par l'absence d'un autre accès à la cour arrière et aux dépendances.
