English: A qanat is a water management system used to provide a reliable supply of water to human settlements or for irrigation in hot arid and semi-arid climates. The technology is known to have developed in ancient Persia, and then spread to other cultures, especially along the Silk Road and Arabian Peninsula. There are still many examples of historic and contemporary qanat systems. The Moors brought them to Spain during the Al-Andalus period of the Iberian peninsula.
Common variants of qanat in English include kanat, khanat, kunut, kona, konait, ghanat, ghundat. The United Arab Emirates and Oman variant is falaj. The Central Asian variant is karez, from the Persian kâreez.

Français : Un qanat est un système d'irrigation souterrain permettant de récolter les eaux d'infiltration. Il est donc différent d'un aqueduc car l'eau est déjà là. Un qanat est construit par le perçage d'un tunnel dans une falaise, un scarp ou une base d'un secteur montagneux, suivant une formation aquifère. Le but est d'apporter l'eau à la surface ou il peut être utilisé pour l'irrigation des terrains agricoles. L'eau n'est pas apportée jusqu'à la surface mais plutôt à l'extérieur : sur la surface irriguée.

Deutsch: Ein qanat ist eine Wasserfassung, die in ariden Gebieten traditionell angewandt wird. Dabei wird eine unterirdische, grundwasserführende Schicht eines Bergmassivs durch einen Stollen angebohrt und das Wasser mit möglichst geringem Gefälle abgeleitet, bis der Stollen im günstigsten Fall die etwas stärker geneigte Geländeoberfläche erreicht. Ab dort kann dann im natürlichen Gefälle bewässert werden. Kann die Geländeoberfläche nicht erreicht werden, muss im Bewässerungsgebiet das Wasser aus dem Stollen über einen Schacht, ähnlich wie bei einem Brunnen, an die Oberfläche gefördert werden.
Qanate ziehen sich oft weit in die Ebene an einem Bergfuß hin, bis sie an die Oberfläche kommen. Typisch sind die kreisförmigen Anhäufungen von Aushubmaterial um in regelmäßigen Abständen angeordnete Kontrollschächte auf Grund von Wartungsarbeiten.
