EN: The Royal Observatory is the home of the Prime Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time. – Founded by Charles II in 1675, its purpose was to make accurate measurements of the positions of the Sun, Moon and stars to help „find the so-much desired longitude of places for the perfectiong of the art of navigation“. – The Observatory was constructed with economy in mind, as the King insisted that the whole building should not cost the crown more than 500 pounds. Building materials were taken from Tilbury Fort and the Tower of London, while old ships spars were brought in to support the lond telescopes.
