English: Japanese Imperial Navy is the designation of the Japanese Navy prior to 1947. It is distinct from the present day Japanese Navy known as the Japanese Maritime Defence Force. There are important political nuances in Japan to use of these names. To some, a "maritime defence force" is different in kind from something called a "navy".
