Strike Fighter Squadron 34 (VA-34) is an aviation unit of the United States Navy. Note: Officially, the U.S. Navy does not recognize a direct lineage with disestablished squadrons if a new squadron is formed with the same designation. Nevertheless, new squadrons often assume the nickname, insignia, and traditions of the earlier squadrons. When the VFA-34 was established in 1970, it adopted the insignia and "Blue Blasters" nickname used by the previous VA-34. History:
15 October 1943: established as Fighting Squadron 20 (VF-20) "Jokers";
15 November 1946: redesignated VF-9A.
12 August 1948: redesignated VF-91.
15 February 1950: redesignated VF-34.
1 July 1955: redesignated Attack Squadron 34 (VA-34) "Blue Blasters";
1 June 1969: disestablished.
1 January 1970: established as VA-34 "Blue Blasters";
30 September 1996: redesignated VFA-34.
