- Tailings — the materials left over after the process of separating the valuable elements from the uneconomic portion of an ore.

- Also called mine dumps, slimes, tails, refuse, leach residue, or slickens — often left as piles and artificial hills.
- They can be produced from underground or surface mining operations.
- NOTE: Tailings are distinct from slag heaps of overburden, which is the waste materials overlying an ore or mineral vein that are displaced during surface mining — without being processed.
