These illustrations are the oldest known (book) versions of the danse macabre or totentanz tradition (1455-1458). Each of the 25 illustrations was produced in blockbook format and hand coloured. Characters depicted range in status for instance from Pope, clergy, monarchy, knight, lawyer, farmer, nun, patient, mother and child. All of the images posted to wikimedia were background cleaned in MSPaint. This series is part of a multi-book codex owned and hosted by the University of Heidelberg - pages: 129r-142r in (Cod. Pal. germ. 438).
