Shoulder Sleeve Insignia[edit]

Description[edit]

  1. A shield-shaped embroidered item edged with a ⅛ inch (.32 cm) black border blazoned as follows: Per pale Gules and Argent, two rifles in saltire, surmounted by a shield charged with a bar checky between two pellets in chief and one in base its crest a castle all Sable.
  2. Attached above the shield, a gold scroll edged with a ⅛ inch black border (.32 cm) inscribed “THREE RIVERS BATTALION” in black letters.
  3. The overall dimensions are 3½ inches (8.89 cm) in height and 3 inches (7.62 cm) in width.

Symbolism[edit]

  1. Blue and gold are the colors of the university of Pittsburgh.
  2. The divided background of red signifying patriotism, and blue symbolizing piety.
  3. The gold scrolls with black letters and borders are traditional Army colors.
  4. The crossed rifles surmounted by a shield crested by a castle symbolize the Arsenal of Democracy significant to the Pittsburgh’s history; the checker pattern represents the strength and spirit of military training, three black pellets allude to the three rivers of Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio that come together in Pittsburgh.

  1. The shoulder Sleeve insignia was originally authorized 1972-03-13.
  2. It was amended to change the school design and update the description and symbolism of the new design on 2011-04-12.

  1. A Silver color metal and enamel device 1⅛ inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Or, an escutcheon Argent “Silver Gray” charged checky with three plates, two in chief and one in base, all conjoined to a three tower embattled castle in chief surmounting two rifles in saltire offensive ends up.
  2. Attached above the shield, a white scroll inscribed “THREE RIVERS”.
  3. Attached below the shield a scroll parted to the left and inscribed “ARMAMENTARIAM” and to the right a blue scroll inscribed “DEMOCRATIA”, Which translate to: Arsenal of Democracy

  1. Hoist: Three Feet.
  2. Fly: Four Feet.
  3. The flag is yellow with a black fringe. In the upper hoist is the monogram “ARMY ROTC” in black on a yellow disc edged in black, 6½ inches in diameter.
  4. The Shield of the University of Pittsburgh, 16 inches in height or diameter, is centered on the flag.
