English: Wayang, the shadow puppets prevalent in Java and Bali, is an Indonesian theatrical performance which displays only the shadow instead of the figures itself. Wayang is practised not only on Java and Bali, but also on the islands of Lombok, Madura, Sumatra and Borneo. The stories are usually drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata or the Serat Menak. Wayang, the Javanese word for puppet, also connotes "spirit". Performances are typically accompanied by gamelan music. The Wayang Puppet Theatre was designated by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on 7 November, 2003.
