Western Orissa (Western Odisha), also referred as Kosal or Kosalanchal or Hirakhand, is a territory in western part of Orissa state, India, extending from the Kalahandi district in the south to the Sundargarh district in the northwest. Kosal region includes all of the pre-1993 districts of Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, and Balangir, and part of the then-undivided Koraput, Dhenkanal, and Phulbani districts. Prior to the 5th century, en:Dakshina Kosala Kingdom (Dakhin Kosal) was one of the several names by which this region was known.
