William Harrison Hays, Sr. (1879 – 1954), namesake of the Hays Code for censorship of American films, was chairman of the Republican National Committee (1918–21), U.S. Postmaster General (1921-22), and first president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (later renamed the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)) (1922-45).
