English: The Central Library of the the Rostock public library system (Stadtbibliothek) was founded in 1919, incorporating earlier foundations. The central library was destroyed in an Allied air raid in 1942. In 1945 it reopened on Richard-Wagner-Straße 1a, however, due to dilapidation this site had to be evacuated in 1957. Then the book holdings were distributed among the affiliated branch libraries. In 1961 the Central Library unit and reading hall moved into the Ratschow House earlier expropriated from the homonymous merchant family.
