Alternative medicine Traditional Western medicine relies largely on reassurance, chemicals, and surgery. Traditional Eastern medicine uses light interactive massage, acupuncture, herbs, and meditation. The overlap is wider than at first appears. There are over thirty alternative therapies, and more are appearing. In many cultures, medicine links in with religion. Good thinking correlates strongly with good health. For success in therapy, the patient needs to be comforted, or promised comfort, in body, mind and network. 'Bedside manner' is the hallmark of a succesful therapist. The positive effect of bedside manner on the immune system strengthens the patient's resources. A good relationship with the therapist also enhances the self-esteem of the therapist, who in turn can pass it on to other patients, and will radiate health-building approval at the next meeting with the patient.
