Category talk:Categories by city

Despite the meaning of "a city", categories of this group are often used for towns and even villages. I think it's acceptable as different countries or even states have different legal and administrative systems discriminating cities from towns and villages and the exact categorisation would be too complex. However, sometimes users remove these categories from files or categories regarding villages as they don't have w:Town privileges, but give no better category instead. Do you think it's better to create category "Categories by village" parallel to this one or just consider "city" in category's names liberal, as it used to be. Panek (talk) 14:51, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

@Panek: Yes, perhaps. Or even better "Categories by populated place". In 2012 the amount of work would perhaps have been feasible, but now both solutions would mean a lot of work, which nobody wants to do (is my experience).

I agree: it is a mess. For the Netherlands I just closed a disussion about the same subject because there is no agreement, see Commons:Categories for discussion/2023/03/Category:Categories of the Netherlands by city.
