Category talk:Snow in Switzerland

This category is grossly overloaded with (as I write) over 8 times as many images as it is made to take. Total category content should preferably not exceed 200 items, so that all appear on a single page.

Tasks to be done:

  1. In many photos the snow content is minimal, such as patches of snow visible on a distant mountain on the horizon. These photos should be removed from the category altogether.
  2. Break down the remaining photos into several subcategories, either by Canton, or by snow type (lowland winter snow, permanent mountain snow, glaciers, etc.).
  3. Until completed, the tag {{catdiffuse}} should remain at the top of the page to encourage others to assist in this mammoth task.

Hi MPF, thanks for finally discussing this.
  • A. There isn't really a fixed rule to break down categories after a given number of entries. Each category with more than 200 entries has a link on top and the bottom of the first page to move to the next page. This is a wiki, not paper. Images don't fall off the category if they are beyond the first 200. (Ok, I'd rather not always look at the same first 20 entries, but this doesn't necessarily change if there are just 100 images).
  • B. (1) As snow identifies the general climate of a location and/or the season the image was taken, it's useful to categorize this, even it's just one aspect of an image. If someone wants a set of images of a given place in the winter or snow, images such as File:AltSanktJohann02.JPG should be included too.
  • C. (2) Subcategories by canton are probably possible, but it would duplicate the category structure that starts by location and wouldn't be that useful. Breaking down locality categories by snow/no snow doesn't seem useful either.
  • D. (2) If you can suggest useful sub-categories, this would be worth developing, but undiscussed changes don't necessarily improve things. Subcategories by snow type could be interesting, but this is probably too complicated if not much description is available for each image. Category:Snow doesn't seem to have any and if there were, these could still be parallel to Category:Snow by country. Category:Glaciers of Switzerland should definitely be developped, but this needn't necessarily be combined.
Until we agree on a course of action and a category description, I will remove the note and {{catdiffuse}} for now (3). BTW, MPF, please mention in your edit summary if you change the category description (e.g. "note" is fine).

I agree with MPF - for many of these images, snow is not a subject of the image. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 05:55, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but I really don't understand why the work of categorizing pictures by canton, which had already been started, was undone. I don't see how redirecting those subcategories back to the overloaded parent category "Snow in Switzerland" can be considered a simplification. Nor do I get the following argument: *C. (2) Subcategories by canton are probably possible, but it would duplicate the category structure that starts by location and wouldn't be that useful. Breaking down locality categories by snow/no snow doesn't seem useful either. What are you saying...???? --Pingelig (talk) 11:35, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
