First design[edit]

User:W!B: had in November 2008 good ideas, as well for sorting criteria as for a structure:

please sort single glyphs by UC-number (4/5 digits, hexadecimal):
• if SVG by (as we named most svg-images like that, and Image:-suffix is used for sorting, see meta:Categories #Sort key, For the gallery of images in a category..)
• for 5-digit planesblocks sort by (by now, that will put them, which sorts them behind +, but before pixels) - prefer starting a subcat, see below
• if pixel (gif, png, jpg) try to convert ist - if not, sort by (most gifs are named by that, so we do not have to split up pixel/vector by now)
• whole planeblock grafics by (starting number of planeblock, or same as 5-digit-glyphs)
→ later we will categorize by UC-planeblock (first 2/3 digits)
• by now, they are named Category:Unicode ####-#### Name-of-planeblock as Category:Unicode 2600-26FF Miscellaneous Symbols (do not use capitals for all)
• sort them by (starting number of planeblock, or same as 5-digit-glyphs)
• single glyphs in there by UC-number (last 2 digits) by
• main planeblock images by

Discussion[edit]

1. We should not have too long names — it is just difficult to read (and to type). Names as
Category:Unicode ####-#### Name-of-block can be very long.
Category:Unicode is well organized when having subcategories of the Unicode Planes:
• BMP, SMP and whatever we shall need further.
These subcategories contain itself further subcategories, the Unicode Blocks.
2. The sorting options for subcategories should always start with a space, otherwise they are all sorted to the title letter "U" - which makes not much sense.
3. Within the lowest subcategory, the files should be sorted by their codepoint number, always in the same form
.

It seems not so easy to keep the files of the Unicode glyphs strictly within their block ranges. Unicode has (by historical reasons?) glyphs of one type often spread into different blocks; e.g. CJK-letters are in 14 different blocks in three planes, while other Asian glyphs (Katakana, Hiragana, Bopomofo, Hangeul and many more) have their own blocks.
Depending CJK glyphs, they are all in one category — otherwise it would not be better.

This is not a meta-category[edit]

Two users already explained that it isn’t, but a lone Sarang (talk · contribs) still persists in his heresy. If one wants to have something like category: Unicode characters by block, then just make it. w:Unicode is a standard, not only a collection of characters. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 18:11, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
