Erling Mandelmann[edit]

As described at Commons:Village pump#Image donation by Erling Mandelmann (permalink) and Commons:Erling Mandelmann, the portraits at http://www.erlingmandelmann.ch/portraits_all/liste.php have been released as CC-BY-SA. It would be very helpful to batch-upload them, using File:Jan Tschichold (1963) by Erling Mandelmann.jpg as a template. Sandstein (talk) 20:50, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Opinions[edit]

Working on it--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 13:43, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Assigned to Progress Bot name Category
Diaa abdelmoneim done Dudubot Category:Photographs by Erling Mandelmann
The script is ready I uploaded the first three pages already and will wait for feedback before proceeding. Images can be seen at Category:Photographs by Erling Mandelmann --Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 18:56, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Looks good to me. I'd go ahead. Eventually we should create the category description pages at least with "[[:Category:People by name]]".  Docu  at 19:08, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
All date ranges have been lost, e.g. this file was wrongly transfered as 1986. Trycatch (talk) 20:03, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the speedy help! Looks good so far. Apart from the above, I'm seeing only one issue: "Unknown" is misspelled as "unkown" in the file names (it could probably be omitted altogether there?) and in the description. Sandstein (talk) 21:36, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
I'll get back to it in a few days and fix the script with the suggestions.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 21:48, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
+There are some non-trivial description that were wrongly parsed & transfered (this, for example). I think, it's would be good, if bot would transfer verbatim description that it can't recognise. Trycatch (talk) 22:01, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
BTW If the date is unknown, I wouldn't add that to the filename.  Docu  at 06:16, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Things to do with the first series:

I started working on the above, but some still needs to be done. BTW careful with renaming, many images are already used at WP.  Docu  at 15:31, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

I've drawn up a work progress list at Category talk:Photographs by Erling Mandelmann, to be used after the upload is complete. Sandstein (talk) 18:14, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
I added there two galleries with currently unused images. They include search links to fr.wp and en.wp. I tried to remove subsequent images of the same person. It might be easier to copy the entire gallery to a wikipedia and use wiki-links to see if an article exists (copy this).  Docu  at 05:14, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Statistics (source):

FYI, I made an announcement on the French-speaking Wikipedia Village Pump, asking for help in diffusing the images (see here). Response has been very positive. A user even asked if this positive feedback and thanks could be passed on to M. Mandelmann. Jean-Fred (talk) 14:19, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

It seems that the portraits help illustrate many biographies in French Wikipedia that didn't have any photos yet.  Docu  at 14:24, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the announcement, Jean-Frédéric. I'll inform Mr. Mandelmann about that thread once the upload is complete and the photos are used in our articles. Sandstein (talk)

I tweaked the bot to:

  1. remove the date from the title if there is none (why remove the date ranges from the title?)
  2. Add date ranges to the title and use the date range template or Unknown template in description
  3. Add other persons in the title, description and add categories for them(Up to three persons)

I think that's it. Are there any other request? Should I wikify the description and add English and French links to the persons in the picture?--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 18:48, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Date ranges after names are frequently understood as YOB and YOD of persons. It's not too clear what the dates here related to.
For some series, I was under the impression that the first year is the year of the first image in the series and the second year the one of the last image in the series. Thus I wouldn't add them to the file name of each image.  Docu  at 19:17, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
In any case, I fixed all dates in the descriptions. There are about 35 images left that need renaming. If an admin did that, we could move on. The longer we wait the more replacements CommonsDelinker needs to do.  Docu  at 19:37, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
I think I have renamed them all. Diaa abdelmoneim, I think that your changes to the bot make sense, but I agree with Docu that we shouldn't have date ranges in the title, as users may confuse them for birth/death dates. Wikilinking to the English, German and French articles, if any, would be a nice touch too. Sandstein (talk) 22:02, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Good work, thanks. There are just 7 left. BTW are the Bramsen and Alechinsky images correctly labeled?  Docu  at 22:06, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Currently uploading at full speed, I added wikilinks for English and French Wikipedia as well.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 15:45, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Huh, just noticed something: in the OTRS ticket, the link in the attribution was meant to lead to the main pain of M. Mandelmann website, not the deep link to the source picture. Dunno if that is that important though. Jean-Fred (talk) 16:45, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

All images are now on Commons.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 18:29, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

To make it easier to check if a given Wikipedia could use a some of the images, I made a gallery at Category_talk:Photographs_by_Erling_Mandelmann#all_images. Just paste it on a page in a Wikipedia and, in preview mode, follow the non-red links.  Docu  at 04:42, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
There are a few images in Category:Media renaming requests needing target that should probably be renamed, but we still need to determine a suitable filename.  Docu  at 03:25, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
