The Sierra Nevada in North America is only in the U.S. states of California and Nevada. The range does not occur in any other country of N.A. I propose that this category be renamed Category:Sierra Nevada (U.S.). RedWolf (talk) 08:34, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
I have been reviewing w:Wikipedia:Manual of Style (abbreviations) with regards to the use of abbreviations in category names and it seems that generally speaking, abbreviations should not be used but there seems to be some consensus that it be considered on a case by case basis. The bottom line is, I could find no definitive clear-cut policy on abbreviating the United States to U.S. for category names. I guess I would be ok with Teofilo's suggestion except there should not be a dash. So instead it would be Category:Sierra Nevada (United States). RedWolf (talk) 07:39, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
"United States" is fine; never "United-States" with hyphen (looks pseudo French...) - Jmabel ! talk 04:47, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
respectfully Oppose: in geography & related fields the established convention is to assign physical features as subcategories of other physical features NOT as subcats of political units. 2 different subjects, of 2 different kinds of mapping. we're doing it wrong @ wmc.... Category:Sierra Nevada, United States looks to me the most logical name (the tendency on commons is to use the comma for (extensible) disambiguation of where it is, the (xxx) form for disambiguation of what it is). --Foroa (talk) 06:25, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Conclusion: No consensus to rename to one or the other form. -- User:Docu at 08:29, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
